Bizarre Brewing The Flood

Porter 3.8 º
Evoking the historic London-style Brown Porter, The Flood presents a complex grain bill centered on Maris Otter malt, delivering a rich, bready foundation. Layers of chocolate and caramel malts offer depth without harshness, while flaked rye adds a subtle spicy nuance and beechwood smoked malt provides a whisper of campfire complexity. Clean bitterness from Magnum hops supports the floral and earthy qualities of East Kent Goldings. Despite its sessionable strength, the beer maintains a sophisticated malt profile and a balanced, dry finish typical of the English Porter tradition, complemented by soft fruity esters from the house yeast.
Appearance. SRM 25–30. Deep mahogany brown with ruby highlights. Topped with a creamy, tan-colored head showing good retention and lacing. Brilliant clarity.
Aroma. Moderate intensity featuring toasted bread, milk chocolate, and light caramel. Subtle hints of wood smoke and spicy rye are present. Low earthy and floral hop character from the East Kent Goldings. Mild fruity esters reminiscent of dried plum.
Taste. Initial bready and biscuity malt sweetness followed by layers of cocoa and toffee. Low level of beechwood smoke adds complexity without being acrid. Moderate bitterness from Magnum and East Kent Goldings provides balance. Earthy hop flavor persists into a clean, moderately dry finish with a lingering chocolate-malt aftertaste.
Mouthfeel. Medium-light body with a smooth, slightly creamy texture enhanced by flaked barley. Moderate carbonation. No astringency or alcohol warmth.

The Flood is our nod to the brown porters of London and an homage to the folks that perished in the great porter flood of 1814. Our version was brewed with English Maris Otter malt, flaked barley and rye, a selection of caramel and chocolate malts and a touch of beechwood smoked malt. Hopped with East Kent Goldings and Magnum in the kettle, this beer was then allowed to ferment and naturally carbonate with our favorite English ale yeast.
