Bizarre Brewing Mind Field No.03 – Fresh Hops (2024)
This session-strength Altbier, or "Little Ale," layers complex grain and fruit notes into a refreshingly low-alcohol frame. The foundation of Pilsner and Vienna malts provides a classic toasted bread crust character, while spelt and oat additions contribute a subtle rustic graininess and smooth texture. Highlighting the 2024 harvest, fresh Cashmere hops deliver an intense herbal and melon-like freshness, supported by the citrus and tropical notes of Riwaka and Simcoe. Fermented cool with a house Kölsch strain and aged on peaches and apricots, the beer exhibits a nuanced stone fruit brightness that complements the firm, clean bitterness and dry finish characteristic of the style.
Appearance. Deep amber with bronze-orange highlights; slight haze due to fresh hop oils and the use of spelt and oats. Crowning the pour is a thick, creamy, long-lasting off-white head with fine lacing.
Aroma. Moderate intensity featuring rich toasted bread and nutty malt. Prominent fresh-cut grass and herbal notes from fresh Cashmere hops are complemented by secondary citrus and tropical fruit cues from Riwaka and Simcoe. Subtle peach and apricot esters blend seamlessly with a clean fermentation profile.
Taste. Initial impression of toasted grain and nutty Vienna malt. The mid-palate introduces delicate peach and apricot fruitiness that feels natural rather than sweet. A firm, spicy bitterness from the fresh hops and kettle additions provides structure, leading to a very dry, clean, and crisp finish with lingering herbal hop flavors.
Mouthfeel. Medium-light body with a smooth, slightly creamy palate derived from the oat and spelt content. Carbonation is moderate-high, enhancing the crispness. Entirely devoid of alcohol warmth.
