This Foreign Extra Stout presents a rich tapestry of deep-roasted character and luxurious texture. The core sensory experience is driven by the interplay of chocolate malt and roasted barley, yielding intense notes of bitter espresso and dark cacao. These sharp roasted edges are tempered by the inclusion of dark crystal malts, which contribute a comforting toffee sweetness and hints of dried fruit. The addition of malted oats ensures a remarkably smooth, full-bodied mouthfeel that belies its approachable strength. Appearance. Opaque and very deep brown to black in color (38 SRM). Features a large, persistent tan head with excellent retention and thick, creamy lacing.
Aroma. High roast intensity dominated by coffee and dark chocolate. Subtle hints of dark fruit esters and a light toffee sweetness from the malts. Low earthy hop notes with no detectable diacetyl.
Taste. Moderate to high roast character featuring bitter coffee and dark chocolate from the roasted barley and chocolate malt. Mid-palate introduces sweet toffee and caramel from the dark crystal malts. Medium-high bitterness is well-integrated, leading to a moderately dry and clean finish with a lingering cocoa aftertaste.
Mouthfeel. Medium-full to full body with a notably smooth and creamy texture derived from the malted oats. Moderate carbonation with very low alcohol warmth, providing a soft and coating sensation without being cloying.
