Appearance. Deep amber to dark copper with mahogany highlights (18-22 SRM). It displays brilliant clarity from long maturation. The head is a low, creamy, off-white foam with modest retention, leaving visible legs on the glass due to high viscosity and alcohol content.
Aroma. High intensity and profoundly complex. Initial notes of rich caramel, toasted bread, and deep toffee are followed by intense dried fruit esters like raisin, plum, and prune. The barrel influence introduces distinct aromas of malt whisky, subtle oak, and vanilla. Hop character is low, offering a faint earthy and marmalade-like quality. High but smooth alcohol presence with a pleasant, sherry-like oxidation.
Taste. A massive wave of malty sweetness featuring layers of biscuit, treacle, and dark caramel. Mid-palate reveals complex fruitiness reminiscent of Christmas cake and dates. The barrel provides a scotch-soaked wood character with hints of vanilla. Bitterness is moderate but balanced by the immense malt backbone, finishing moderately sweet and warming. Earthy English hop flavors linger briefly before a vinous, liquor-like aftertaste takes over.
Mouthfeel. Full-bodied and exceptionally chewy with a viscous, luscious texture. Carbonation is low, enhancing the liquid-silk feel. A significant, smooth alcohol warmth is present, reflecting the high strength, but it is well-integrated and velvety without being harsh or fusel.
