Birrificio dell’AltaVia Monte Rama

Monte Rama is a sophisticated Alternative Sugar Beer that harmonizes rustic Alpine traditions with refined sensory balance. The profile is defined by the seamless integration of homegrown wildflower honey and malts smoked over chestnut wood in traditional tecci. On the nose, delicate floral honey notes intertwine with a savory, earthy smoke. The palate reveals a rich malt foundation supporting flavors of toasted chestnuts and honeyed sweetness, balanced by a gentle bitterness. At 7.4% ABV, it offers a warming presence that complements its medium-full body. This complex marriage of forest smoke and apiary sweetness results in a deeply evocative and balanced specialty ale.
Appearance. Deep copper to chestnut brown (SRM 18–24). Topped with a persistent, creamy, off-white head that leaves moderate lacing. Clarity is generally clear, though a very slight haze from honey proteins may be present.
Aroma. Moderate to high intensity. A distinct floral and herbaceous aroma from the wildflower honey leads, followed by a refined, campfire smoke character. Nutty, earthy notes of roasted chestnuts are evident, backed by a bready, toasted malt profile. Fermentation esters are low, showing subtle hints of dried stone fruit.
Taste. Initial impression is a blend of honeyed sweetness and savory smoke. Rich toasted malt flavors provide a sturdy backbone, while the chestnuts contribute a subtle, woody nuttiness. Hop bitterness is moderate, providing enough structure to prevent the honey from becoming cloying. The finish is balanced and lingering, with a clean smoke and honey aftertaste.
Mouthfeel. Medium-full body with a smooth, almost velvety texture. Carbonation is moderate. A noticeable but well-integrated alcohol warmth is present, reflecting the 7.4% ABV. Very low astringency despite the use of smoked malts and chestnuts.
