Named after the Alpine salamander, this Vienna Lager from Monstein offers a rustic, high-altitude take on the classic amber style. Pouring a deep, naturally cloudy amber with copper highlights, it greets the senses with a distinctively rich profile driven by specialty malts. The aroma is defined by toasted bread and a unique walnut-like earthiness, accented by a subtle, atmospheric smoke that honors its Walser heritage. On the palate, the soft malt complexity of Vienna malt provides a smooth foundation, balancing gentle smoke with a firm but elegant bitterness. It finishes clean and relatively dry, leaving a lingering impression of mountain character and refined toasted grain.
Appearance. 9 to 15 SRM; deep reddish-amber to copper in color. Large, off-white, persistent head with moderate lacing. Naturally cloudy (naturtrübe) rather than clear.
Aroma. Moderate intensity with a toasty and malty-rich focus. Distinctive notes of walnut and a subtle, clean wisp of smoke are present alongside a clean lager fermentation profile. Hop aroma is low with a faint spicy or floral character.
Taste. Initial impression is of soft, elegant malt complexity, featuring toasted grain and nutty walnut flavors. A very light smoky character adds depth without becoming acrid. Moderate hop bitterness provides balance against the malt richness. The finish is fairly dry and soft, leaving an aftertaste of toasted malt and low floral hops. Clean fermentation with no esters.
