Spike Island presents a classic Foreign Extra Stout profile, balancing depth with an approachable intensity. The sensory experience is led by a robust malt bill that delivers layers of dark chocolate and roasted coffee, directly reflecting the brewer’s intent for a rich, chocolatey character. A subtle undercurrent of dried fruit esters adds complexity, while the finish leans toward a clean, moderate dryness typical of the style. Appearance. Very deep brown to opaque black (35 SRM). Pours with a large, creamy tan head showing excellent retention and thick lacing.
Aroma. High roast intensity with dominant notes of dark chocolate and espresso. Low dark fruit esters resembling plum or raisin. Very low earthy hop aroma with no diacetyl.
Taste. Moderate roast flavors of unsweetened cocoa and lightly burnt grain. Medium-high bitterness provides a firm balance to the rich malt. Low earthy hop flavor leads into a moderately dry finish with a lingering chocolate aftertaste.
Mouthfeel. Medium-full body with a smooth, notably creamy character. Moderate carbonation with a subtle, well-integrated alcohol warmth.
