This Foreign Extra Stout presents a striking ebony appearance, crowned by a dense, tan nitrogenated head. The sensory experience is defined by a robust and harmonious interplay of Chocolate malt and roasted barley, yielding a rich gallery of dark chocolate and espresso aromas. Subtler notes of caramelized malts provide a delicate sweetness that balances the intense roasted character. Despite its dark, heavy profile, the finish remains moderately dry and sophisticated. The nitro pour significantly enhances the velvety mouthfeel, allowing the roasted grain complexity and a light alcohol warmth to unfold smoothly across the palate, reminiscent of classic export-strength dark ales.
Appearance. Very deep brown to ebony (35-40 SRM); opaque clarity. The nitrogenated pour produces a thick, creamy tan head with exceptional retention and cascading lacing.
Aroma. High roast intensity featuring prominent coffee and dark chocolate notes. Low dark fruit esters like plum are present, alongside a subtle caramelized malt sweetness. Hop aroma is low and earthy.
Taste. Initial impression is dominated by roasted grain, specifically dark chocolate and burnt coffee flavors from the roasted barley and Chocolate malt. Medium-high bitterness is present but tempered by a smooth, caramelized malt backbone. Low fruitiness leads into a moderately dry, lingering roasted finish.
Mouthfeel. Medium-full to full-bodied with a luxurious, velvety creaminess due to the nitro carbonation. Low carbonation bite; provides a light, well-integrated alcohol warmth and very low astringency.
