The high ABV provides a noticeable but smooth warmth that carries the heavy hop load through the palate. Despite its strength, the beer maintains a soft, pillowy texture often associated with modern hazy iterations of the Double IPA style. A clean, neutral malt base allows the tropical and citrus complexities of the Riwaka to shine, finishing with a firm, lingering bitterness that balances the substantial body without becoming cloying.
Appearance. Deep gold to light orange (SRM 7-9). Opaque and heavily hazy with a thick, persistent white head that leaves dense, soapy lacing.
Aroma. High intensity hop aroma featuring pungent grapefruit, passion fruit, and lime zest. Subtle resinous pine and a hint of tropical melon are present. Malt is low and neutral, providing a light cracker-like background. Clean fermentation profile with no significant esters.
Taste. Initial hop-forward punch of tropical fruit and citrus pith. Bitterness is moderately high and firm but lacks harshness. Very low, soft malt presence with light bread-dough notes. The finish is medium-dry with a long, resinous, and fruity aftertaste. Alcohol is present as a smooth, clean flavor.
Mouthfeel. Medium-full body with a soft, creamy, and rounded texture. Moderate carbonation. A smooth, warming alcohol sensation is prominent but well-integrated. No hop-derived astringency.
