This Foreign Extra Stout presents a rich, sensory journey rooted in dark roasted grains. Initial aromatics of espresso and dark chocolate are enriched by a distinct character reminiscent of Jamaican rum cake, evoking notes of spice and dried fruit. On the palate, a lush sweetness from sponge toffee notes provides a bridge to the assertive, dry bitterness typical of the style. The finish is defined by a lingering, slightly bitter burnt demerara sugar quality. Full-bodied and smooth, this stout balances its 6.5% ABV with complex malt depth and a clean, roasty intensity that honors traditional Caribbean export profiles.
Appearance. Very deep brown to jet black (35+ SRM); opaque with a large, creamy tan head that demonstrates excellent retention and leaves significant lacing.
Aroma. High intensity aromatics of roasted coffee and dark chocolate dominate, complemented by secondary notes of dried fruit and molasses reminiscent of Jamaican rum cake. Subtle sponge toffee sweetness and a low earthy hop character are present.
Taste. The initial impression is of rich roasted malt and unsweetened dark chocolate. Mid-palate flavors of sponge toffee and dark fruit transition into a firm, clean bitterness. The finish is moderately dry with a characteristic burnt demerara sugar aftertaste and lingering roast.
Mouthfeel. Full-bodied and smooth with a creamy texture; carbonation is moderate to moderately high. A gentle, integrated alcohol warmth is present without being hot or fusel.
