Beavertown Smog Rocket
Smog Rocket is an evocative Specialty Smoked Beer that pays homage to industrial London. The sensory journey begins with a pervasive but balanced aroma of beechwood smoke from authentic German Rauchmaltz. This is layered over a complex foundation of Simpsons Best, Munich, and Chocolate malts, which provide deep notes of molasses and roasted coffee. On the palate, the sweetness of raisins and caramel from Crystal and Caramalt is expertly countered by the resinous, piney character of Chinook hops. The addition of Oats lends a velvety smoothness, bridging the gap between the aggressive smoke and the bitter roast of Black malt, resulting in a sophisticated, lingering finish.
Appearance. Deep ebony to black (SRM 35-40), appearing opaque in the glass. It is topped by a thick, persistent tan head that leaves significant lacing.
Aroma. Moderate to high intensity smoke character reminiscent of a crackling fire. Beneath the smoke lies a rich malt profile of dark chocolate, toasted bread, and subtle molasses. Low resinous hop notes and faint dark fruit esters of raisin are present.
Taste. Initial flavors of sweet caramel and dark fruit are quickly joined by assertive, pleasant wood smoke. The mid-palate reveals layers of coffee and bitter cocoa. Hop bitterness is moderate, supported by the resinous flavor of Chinook. The finish is balanced and off-dry, with a lingering smoky aftertaste and a clean, roasted grain character.
Mouthfeel. Medium-full body with a notable creaminess and smooth texture from the inclusion of oats. Carbonation is moderate. It exhibits very light alcohol warmth and is free from smoke-derived astringency or harshness.

This 5.4% Porter is an original home brew recipe (and one of the first beers to be served at Dukes) using 9 different malts including a good chunk of smoked ‘Rauchmaltz’ from Bamberg, Germany. All of the big flavour hits of molasses, smoked hickory wood, raisins, and caramel are balanced with the resinous US hop Chinook. This cuts the sweetness and lets the smokey aromas fly, reminiscent of the smokestacks of industrial London.
