The sensory experience begins with a deep mahogany pour and an inviting aroma of toffee and cocoa. On the palate, the Maris Otter provides a sturdy, bready foundation that supports a complex medley of toasted flavors. Carafa malt contributes a clean roastiness without harshness, while the Chocolate malt drives a prominent, lingering aftertaste of dark chocolate. The inclusion of oat flakes ensures a remarkably creamy mouthfeel despite the sessionable gravity, resulting in a balanced and smooth finish true to its heritage.
Appearance. Deep mahogany to dark brown (25-30 SRM) with ruby highlights; clear but appears opaque in the glass. Displays a moderate, creamy tan head with good retention and light lacing.
Aroma. Moderate intensity featuring bready and toasty Maris Otter malt character. Layered with notes of toffee, dark caramel from the Crystal Extra Dark, and a distinct milk chocolate and cocoa aroma. Low earthy hop notes and very subtle fruity esters are present.
Taste. Initial impression is of toasty malt and toffee sweetness, followed by a medley of roasted grains. Mid-palate reveals cocoa and nutty flavors with a moderate bitterness that balances the residual malt sweetness. The finish is clean and slightly dry, dominated by a persistent and smooth chocolate aftertaste without any burnt or acrid qualities.
Mouthfeel. Medium-light body with a distinctive creaminess provided by the oat flakes. Moderate carbonation creates a soft texture on the tongue. No perceptible alcohol warmth given the sessionable strength.
