Le Royale presents a decadent fusion of a classic English Barley Wine and a seasoned Imperial Stout. The extended four-hour boil and complex malt bill yield deep layers of caramel and toasted bread, further enriched by nine months in maple syrup barrels. The addition of French oak-aged stout introduces a sophisticated depth of dark chocolate, vanilla, and hints of licorice. Aromas of bourbon and toffee lead into a palate where the robust, bready cereal notes meet the silky, dark fruit elegance of the stout. This is a powerful, warming sipper that balances intense sweetness with woody structure and a lingering, luxurious finish.
Appearance. Deep mahogany to dark brown (SRM 22-30) with ruby highlights at the edges. Small, fine-beaded tan head with low retention and visible legs due to high alcohol and viscosity.
Aroma. High intensity. Dominant aromas of maple syrup and rich caramel are layered over toasted bread and toffee. Complex secondary notes of vanilla, bourbon-like oak, and dark chocolate are present, accompanied by subtle hints of raisins and licorice from the stout component.
Taste. Initial impression is deeply malty and sweet. Complex flavors of toffee, chocolate, and maple syrup intertwine with vanilla and woody oak. Low hop bitterness provides just enough balance to the rich malt base. Fermentation character includes dark fruit esters like raisins. The finish is long and warming with a lingering sweetness and a hint of licorice.
Mouthfeel. Full-bodied and chewy with a silky, velvety texture. Carbonation is low to moderate. Noticeable alcohol warmth is smooth and well-integrated, providing a round, comforting sensation without harshness.
