Basqueland Brewing

This Imperial Rye Porter delivers a sophisticated sensory experience shaped by six months of maturation in French Oak barrels. A complex grist featuring chocolate rye malt and seven other varieties provides a deep foundation of bittersweet cocoa and spiced bread, while the fifteen percent rye content adds a distinct peppery nuance. Infusions of toasted coconut offer a delicate, nutty sweetness that harmonizes with the intense roasted character of an American Stout. On the palate, the wood aging contributes refined tannins and a hint of coconut shell, resulting in a dense, velvety profile where dark chocolate and tropical accents linger through a smooth, high-gravity finish.

Appearance. Jet black and opaque (SRM 40+). It produces a thick, persistent, deep tan head with excellent retention and significant lacing.

Aroma. High intensity. Dominant notes of dark chocolate and roasted coffee beans are layered with a spicy, earthy rye character. Toasted coconut is present but subtle, accompanied by woody, vanillin-like nuances from the French Oak. Low resiny hop aroma and light dark fruit esters are tucked in the background.

Taste. Bold initial impression of cocoa and roasted grains. The palate features chocolate rye malt’s distinctive spice and the nuttiness of toasted coconut. Moderate bitterness balances the malt sweetness, leading to a complex finish of burnt sugar, coconut shell, and smooth oak tannins. The aftertaste is long, clean, and chocolate-forward.

Mouthfeel. Full-bodied and viscous with a notably creamy texture enhanced by the rye content. Carbonation is moderate. Significant but well-integrated alcohol warmth is present, remaining smooth rather than hot. Minimal roast-derived astringency.
