This Black IPA presents an inviting, dark profile where the character of debittered roast malts meets the assertive presence of American hops. At 5.5% ABV, it balances a medium body with deep sensory layers. The influence of dark malts is evident, offering distinctive notes of fresh coffee and a touch of light chocolate that define the initial palate. These darker elements are integrated to ensure the hop-forward bitterness remains the focal point, lingering gracefully into a dry finish. It captures the essence of a Specialty IPA, marrying the drinkability of a standard IPA with the complex, toasted elegance of a darker brew.
Appearance. Very dark brown to near black (SRM 35-40), appearing nearly opaque. It features a persistent, cappuccino-colored foam head with moderate lacing.
Aroma. Moderate to high intensity hop aroma with resinous and citrus notes. The malt character is supportive rather than dominant, providing light chocolate, toasted bread, and subtle coffee scents. Clean fermentation profile.
Taste. The initial impression is a balance of roasted malt and hop bitterness. Flavors of espresso and light chocolate are present but restrained, avoiding any burnt or ashy harshness. A firm, medium-high hop bitterness provides the core structure, leading to a dry finish with a lingering, bitter aftertaste and a touch of roasted grain.
Mouthfeel. Medium body with a smooth, slightly creamy texture. Carbonation is moderate and non-intrusive. Alcohol warmth is very light and well-integrated, providing no astringency.
