Barret TAM Couvee presents a sophisticated evolution of the classic Scottish Light, transformed by three months of barrel maturation. This amber-hued ale exudes an evocative sensory profile defined by distinct wood and subtle smoke, reminiscent of traditional hearthside comforts. The malt backbone remains central, offering layers of toasted breadcrumbs and rich toffee that harmonize with the barrel’s rustic influence. Despite its lineage as a lighter style, this version carries a heightened presence and complexity from the wood, leading to a finish marked by a gentle, roasty dryness. It is a refined, malty experience best appreciated in a traditional thistle glass.
Appearance. Deep amber to copper (SRM ~16). Clear with a low to moderate, creamy off-white head that shows decent retention.
Aroma. Moderate intensity featuring a malt-forward bouquet of caramel and toffee. Prominent notes of seasoned wood and light campfire smoke from the barrel aging. Subtle hints of red apple and earthy English hops.
Taste. Initial impressions of bready, toasted malt and caramelized sugars. Mid-palate introduces woody tannins and a wisp of smoke. Bitterness is low, serving only to balance the residual sweetness. The finish is clean with a lingering roasty dryness and a touch of oak.
