Baron Brewing Rough Scorp.
Rough Scorp is an unapologetic Double IPA that rejects modern haze in favor of the assertive, pine-forward character of the original West Coast giants. A straight barley base provides a clean, neutral canvas for a massive dry-hop addition of Simcoe and Centennial. The sensory profile is dominated by pungent resin, forest pine, and sharp grapefruit zest, supported by a staggering 120 IBU that delivers a firm, lingering bitterness. At 8.2% ABV, it carries a smooth, integrated warmth. This is a high-intensity tribute to the classic era, balancing a lean, dry malt backbone with an aggressive, floral, and citrus-heavy hop saturation.
Appearance. Deep gold to light copper (approx. 8–12 SRM). Brilliantly clear with no haze. Pours with a moderate-sized, persistent, off-white head that leaves significant lacing on the glass.
Aroma. High-intensity hop aroma featuring dominant notes of resinous pine, grapefruit pith, and floral undertones. A clean, neutral, grainy malt character sits quietly in the background. Fermentation is clean with very low fruity esters and a faint, smooth alcohol presence.
Taste. The initial impression is an explosion of pine and citrus hop flavor. Bitterness is very high and aggressive but remains clean and crisp rather than harsh. A minimal, cracker-like malt profile provides just enough support to keep the hop oil from becoming overwhelming. The finish is bone-dry with a long-lingering, resinous, and bitter aftertaste. Low floral esters are present.
Mouthfeel. Medium-bodied with a smooth, oily texture from the heavy hopping. Carbonation is moderate-high. There is a noticeable but restrained alcohol warmth that remains smooth and well-integrated. No significant hop-derived astringency.
