Barclay’s Cohesion presents a monumental Imperial Stout profile, defined by its intensive twenty-three-month double-barreling. The Buffalo Trace Mash 1 barrels introduce deep layers of vanilla and toasted caramel, while the subsequent Willett aging adds a sophisticated spicy oak and leather character. Visually imposing and jet black, it offers a decadent bouquet of dark chocolate, molasses, and dried figs. The palate is profoundly rich, delivering bittersweet cocoa and espresso notes intertwined with bourbon-soaked oak. Despite its 14% ABV, the warmth is masterfully integrated, finishing with a lingering, velvety complexity reminiscent of fine port and charred wood.

Appearance. Jet black and fully opaque. A thin, dense, dark tan head forms momentarily before receding to a persistent collar. High viscosity is evident by thick, oily legs coating the glass.

Aroma. High intensity with a complex blend of bittersweet chocolate, espresso, and heavy charred oak. Strong bourbon notes from the Buffalo Trace barrels provide vanilla and caramel, complemented by a subtle spicy perfume from the Willett barrels. Secondary notes of black currants and raisins emerge as it warms.

Taste. Massive initial impact of dark roasted malts, dark chocolate, and black licorice. The mid-palate reveals the barrel influence with layers of rich toffee, vanilla bean, and toasted oak. Moderate bitterness provides structure against the dense malt sweetness. The finish is long and warming, showing vinous dark fruit and a hint of tobacco.

Mouthfeel. Full to very full-bodied with a thick, chewy, and luscious texture. Carbonation is low, enhancing the creamy mouthfeel. A smooth, slow-building alcohol warmth is prominent but lacks any harshness or solvent notes.
