On the palate, a complex malt foundation reveals layers of sweet caramel and distinctive hints of liquorice, providing a depth that belies its 4% ABV. While low in bitterness, the finish is balanced and clean, avoiding excessive sweetness. It captures the quintessential British session character, delivering a comforting, medium-full mouthfeel that encourages another pint.
Appearance. 20-24 SRM. Deep mahogany to dark brown with ruby highlights; moderate tan head with fair retention and light lacing; brilliant clarity.
Aroma. Moderate intensity featuring a rich malt-forward profile of milk chocolate, toasted bread, and subtle toffee. Distinctive notes of Roast Barley provide a light coffee-like edge. Low fruity esters of dark plum are present, while earthy hop aromas remain very faint in the background.
Taste. Initial flavors of sweet caramel and toasted nuts transition into a complex middle of dark chocolate and savory liquorice. The Roast Barley adds a hint of bitterness and dry cocoa character towards the end. Hop bitterness is low, serving only to balance the malt sweetness. The finish is clean and slightly lingering with a gentle bready aftertaste.
