Ballast Point Big Eye IPA
This classic American IPA presents a striking copper-orange hue with a persistent, web-like white head. A dominant aroma of ripe papaya, mango, and pineapple is driven by a heavy hand of Centennial and Columbus hops, which also contribute sharp notes of resinous pine and subtle spice. On the palate, an aggressive hop bitterness takes center stage, supported briefly by toasted bread and light caramel malts. The finish is notably dry and long, characterized by a spicy, herbaceous bitterness. At 7% ABV, it balances a medium body with crisp carbonation, delivering a quintessential West Coast sensory experience.
Appearance. Medium-intensity copper-orange (approx. 10–12 SRM); brilliant, crystalline clarity; generous, fine-bubbled white head with excellent retention and spiderweb-like lacing.
Aroma. High intensity; prominent ripe tropical fruit notes of papaya, mango, and pineapple; secondary aromas of resinous pine and peppery spice from Columbus hops; low toasted malt sweetness provides a supportive base; clean fermentation profile with minimal esters.
Taste. Initial impact of firm hop bitterness followed by flavors of grapefruit rind and tropical fruit; mid-palate reveals toasted bread and light grainy malt; hop character shifts to resinous pine and citrus from Centennial and Columbus varieties; very high bitterness (approx. 70 IBU); finish is dry and clean with a lingering, spicy hop aftertaste.
Mouthfeel. Medium body; medium-high carbonation; smooth texture with a very light, well-integrated alcohol warmth; no harshness or astringency despite the high hop load.
