Bad Seed Brewing

Sluagh is a monumental Imperial Scotch Ale that redefines the Wee Heavy through twenty-four months of maturation in Heaven Hill Bourbon barrels. This 15% ABV powerhouse presents an intense sensory profile dominated by rich, bready-toasty malt and layers of cinder toffee. The extended barrel aging infuses profound notes of toasted oak and creamy vanilla, which interweave with an array of dark fruit and winegumms. The palate is exceptionally deep, offering concentrated caramel and toffee sweetness balanced by the structured tannins of the wood and a significant, spirit-like warmth. It is a viscous, chewy masterpiece of malt complexity and barrel character.

Appearance. Deep mahogany to dark brown in color with brilliant ruby highlights. It forms a small, fine-textured tan head with limited persistence, leaving thick, viscous legs on the glass as it is swirled.

Aroma. High intensity with a dominant bready-toasty malt character and rich notes of caramelized sugar and cinder toffee. The Heaven Hill Bourbon barrel maturation contributes prominent aromas of vanilla, toasted oak, and a hint of coconut. Moderate dark fruit esters resembling raisins and winegumms are supported by a noticeable but clean alcohol presence.

Taste. An initial impression of massive malt sweetness featuring deep caramel, toffee, and burnt sugar. The mid-palate is complex, showcasing vanilla and charred oak from the barrel alongside dark fruit flavors of plum and raisin. Hop bitterness is low, providing just enough balance to prevent a cloying finish. The aftertaste is long and lingering, filled with toasted oak and warming spirit notes.

Mouthfeel. Full-bodied with a thick, chewy, and syrupy viscosity. Carbonation is moderate-low, contributing to a smooth and creamy texture. A significant, well-integrated alcohol warmth is present, providing a pleasant glow without being harsh or fusel.
