Blood Buccaneer is a potent Double American Amber Ale that amplifies the character of its predecessor while maintaining a refined balance. It presents a sophisticated interplay between a rich malt foundation—defined by deep caramel and toasted bread notes—and a vibrant surge of tropical American hops. Despite its robust 9.6% ABV, the intentional lower mash temperature yields a remarkably dry body that prevents the intense malt profile from becoming heavy or cloying. The result is a bold, high-gravity experience where resinous hop bitterness and stone fruit esters are seamlessly integrated into a smooth, warming finish that showcases the brewer's technical precision.
Appearance. Deep copper to reddish-brown in color with excellent clarity. It features a moderately large, dense, off-white head with very good retention and persistent lacing.
Aroma. High intensity aroma featuring prominent tropical fruit notes of mango and papaya from American hops, layered over a moderately-high maltiness of dark caramel and toasted biscuits. Clean fermentation with low fruity esters and a subtle, pleasant alcohol sweetness.
Taste. Initial malt-forward sweetness of caramel and toffee is quickly balanced by assertive tropical hop flavors and a firm, moderately-high bitterness. The mid-palate shows toasted grain complexity. The finish is notably dry and clean for the strength, with a lingering hop resin and a well-integrated alcohol warmth that never becomes harsh.
Mouthfeel. Medium body with high carbonation that provides a crisp edge. The texture is smooth and creamy, finishing with a noticeable but refined alcohol warmth. No astringency despite the high hop and malt load.
