This Imperial Stout presents a masterful display of pure malt complexity, benefiting from a dedicated maturation period that rounds its intense character. The 22° Plato base delivers a profound sensory experience dominated by bittersweet chocolate, roasted espresso, and black licorice. Without the distraction of adjuncts or barrel tannins, the focus remains on deep layers of dark fruit—specifically raisins and prunes—derived from its formidable grain bill. A smooth, well-integrated alcohol warmth glows through the finish, while the velvety texture coats the palate. This is a classic, robust expression where time has melded high-gravity intensity into a harmonious, sophisticated darkness.
Appearance. Jet black and opaque (40 SRM). Topped by a dense, persistent deep tan head with moderate lacing. High viscosity is evident as slow-moving legs form on the glass.
Aroma. High intensity with a rich blend of bittersweet chocolate, espresso, and black licorice. Moderate esters reminiscent of raisins and prunes are balanced by a subtle, clean alcohol warmth and very low earthy hop character.
Taste. Intense flavors of roasted grain and dark chocolate lead to a complex mid-palate of dried black currants and toasted malt. Bitterness is firm but supportive, balancing a light caramel sweetness. The finish is lingering and bittersweet with a smooth, vinous warmth.
Mouthfeel. Very full-bodied and chewy with a velvety, luscious texture. Carbonation is low to moderate. A noticeable but smooth alcohol warmth provides a background glow without harshness.
