Augustijn Blond presents a refined balance of monastic tradition and vibrant yeast character. This Belgian Blond Ale leads with a grainy-sweet malt profile reminiscent of freshly harvested grains, accented by a distinctive, subtle touch of vanilla that adds unexpected depth. The aroma is moderately intense, featuring bright citrusy esters and a light, peppery spice typical of its high-fermentation heritage. On the palate, the beer is smooth and rich yet remarkably drinkable, offering a harmonious blend of honeyed malt and floral hops. A soft bitterness defines the finish, ensuring a clean, slightly dry aftertaste that evolves from fruity and hoppy when fresh to more malt-forward and intense as it matures.

Appearance. Deep gold to amber-blonde (4-6 SRM) with brilliant clarity. Pours with a large, dense, and creamy white head that exhibits excellent retention and leaves significant Belgian lace on the glass.

Aroma. Moderate intensity featuring grainy-sweet, slightly toasty malt notes. The yeast profile is complex, offering fruity esters of orange and lemon alongside subtle peppery phenols and a hint of vanilla. Light floral or earthy hop notes are present in the background.

Taste. Initial impression is of smooth, grainy-sweet malt and a faint, honey-like sweetness. Balanced by a medium-low bitterness, the flavor reveals citrusy esters and a soft, spicy yeast character. The finish is medium-dry and exceptionally smooth, with a lingering, light malt aftertaste and a touch of vanilla sweetness.

Mouthfeel. Medium body with high carbonation that provides a bubbly, mouth-filling sensation. Features a light, well-integrated alcohol warmth and a creamy texture that enhances the overall richness without becoming heavy.

In 1295 the Augustinian friars started to brew Augustijn in their Ghent monastery. In the Middle Ages many monks and priests brewed and sold their own beer. Often, the water was contaminated and that’s why it was safer to drink beer, since it was boiled during the brewing process. In 1978 the Augustinian friars sought a new partner for the brewing of their Augustijn beer.

They had previously also outsourced the brewing of their lager beer. Brewery Van Steenberge was a logical choice, since it was located near the monastery. Respect for the tradition was guaranteed. From then on, Jozef Van Steenberge could enjoy himself and fully live his passion for high-fermentation beers. In 1982 he relaunched Augustijn, with secondary fermentation. A decision that the brewery has never regretted: ever since, Augustijn has known a steady growth, which was further confirmed after the restyling. Augustijn is indeed a genuine beer. One that is appreciated at receptions because of its mild and soft but very rich taste, but also during relaxed moments of tasting. It is in short a beer for every occasion. When you drink the beer at a young age (up to 3 months after bottling), you will experience a fruity and hoppy taste.

When the beer is more mature, it gets a deeper colour and a more pronounced flavour. With the launch of Augustijn Dark in 2009, and together with the Augustijn Grand Cru, the beer that is very much liked by beer connoisseurs and that had been launched before 2009, the Augustijn range is now complete.
