This Imperial Stout is a brooding and decadent experience, delivering an intense sensory profile shaped by its high-gravity foundation and premium adjuncts. Deeply roasted malts provide a canvas for the prominent addition of Hull’s Blending Room espresso roast, which manifests as rich mocha and concentrated coffee notes. The inclusion of Ugandan vanilla introduces a creamy, aromatic sweetness that balances the heavy-handed roast. Layers of molasses and dark treacle emerge mid-palate, leading into a lingering, warming finish typical of its 12% ABV. Bold and viscous, it strikes a harmonious balance between bittersweet espresso bitterness and lush, pod-driven vanilla.
Appearance. Jet black and completely opaque (40 SRM). Pours with a dense, persistent, deep tan head that leaves significant lacing and visible legs on the glass, indicative of high viscosity and alcohol content.
Aroma. High intensity aroma dominated by dark-roasted malts and pungent espresso. Pronounced Ugandan vanilla provides a sweet, floral, and creamy counterpoint. Subtle notes of black licorice, molasses, and dark chocolate are supported by a clean but noticeable alcohol warmth and very low earthy hop character.
Taste. Initial impression is massive and sweet, followed by an assertive wave of roasted grain and bitter espresso. Mid-palate reveals complex layers of mocha, treacle, and dark fruit esters like raisins. The Ugandan vanilla offers a smooth, silky sweetness that tames the roast. Moderate bitterness from both malt and hops provides balance, finishing with a long, bittersweet warmth and lingering coffee notes.
Mouthfeel. Full to very full-bodied with a thick, chewy, and velvety texture. Carbonation is low to moderate, enhancing the creamy mouthfeel. A smooth but significant alcohol warmth is present throughout, reflecting its high strength without becoming sharp or solventy.
