This barrel-aged Imperial Stout emerges from an extended maturation in the darkness, presenting a sophisticated interplay between intense roast and refined spirit character. The aroma is greeted by a complex bouquet of dark chocolate, espresso, and molasses, uplifted by the distinct, vinous warmth of brandy barrel aging. Time has smoothed the significant alcohol into a velvety, integrated warmth. On the palate, deep layers of dried figs, prunes, and black currants meld with charred oak and a subtle caramel sweetness from the wood. It concludes with a harmonious, bittersweet finish, echoing with lingering notes of fine spirit and roasted grain.
Appearance. Jet black and opaque (40 SRM). Pours with a thick, dense, dark tan head with moderate retention and significant viscosity, leaving visible legs on the glass.
Aroma. High intensity with a rich blend of bittersweet chocolate, espresso, and black licorice. Strong esters of dried plum and raisin are complemented by prominent brandy notes, vanilla, and a light oaky toastiness. Alcohol is noticeable but smooth and vinous.
Taste. Initial impression is an intense mix of roasted grain and dark fruit. Deep flavors of cocoa, burnt toast, and black currants are balanced by a firm bitterness. The brandy barrel influence adds layers of stone fruit and caramel, leading to a lingering finish of toasted oak and warming spirit.
Mouthfeel. Full-bodied and chewy with a velvety, luscious texture. Carbonation is low to moderate. A significant but gentle alcoholic warmth is present, devoid of any harshness or solvent qualities.
