Anchorage’s Kill the King is a monumental American Strong Ale, born from a blend of Black Barleywine and Imperial Stout. The sensory experience is dominated by its extensive maturation in 15-year Calumet Farms, Willet, Willet rye, and Buffalo Trace bourbon barrels. Rich waves of dark chocolate and deep toffee collide with the tropical, nutty warmth of toasted coconut. The Willet rye barrels contribute a subtle spicy counterpoint to the massive, velvety malt presence. Expect a decadent, warming profile where the intense barrel character provides layers of vanilla, charred oak, and spiritous complexity against a backdrop of dark, sun-dried fruits.

Appearance. Deep, opaque ebony with garnet highlights; a thin, persistent light tan head that leaves thick, oily legs on the glass, indicating high viscosity.

Aroma. High intensity; rich aromas of dark chocolate, espresso, and molasses are layered with prominent toasted coconut, vanilla, and charred oak. The barrel-aging presents distinct bourbon and spicy rye notes, complemented by dark fruit esters like raisin and plum.

Taste. A massive initial impression of sweet caramel and toffee followed by rich cocoa and roasted grain. The toasted coconut is bold, integrating with the vanilla and oak from the Calumet Farms and Buffalo Trace barrels. A firm bitterness is present but balanced by the dense malt. The finish is long and warming with lingering notes of spicy rye and spirituous bourbon.

Mouthfeel. Full-bodied and highly viscous with a coating, creamy texture. Carbonation is low to moderate. Significant alcohol warmth is present, reflecting its high strength, but it remains smooth rather than sharp.
