Jesse James is a monumental Imperial Stout, intensified by a 21-month slumber in Jim Beam Rye barrels. This double-mash powerhouse features a sophisticated grain bill of Chocolate, Roasted Barley, Black malt, and Crystal T50, layered with the distinct, spicy character of Rugmalt and Cara Rye. The aroma is a decadent blend of espresso and dark chocolate, accented by charred oak and the peppery snap of rye whiskey. Resinous notes from Columbus and Centennial hops provide a necessary structural bitterness to the massive malt sweetness. A subtle hint of smoke weaves through the velvety texture, culminating in a sophisticated, spirit-forward finish of great depth.
Appearance. Jet black and completely opaque. Pours with high viscosity, forming thick legs on the glass walls. Topped by a dense, deep tan head with moderate retention and fine lacing.
Aroma. High intensity with a complex layering of bittersweet chocolate, heavy roast, and espresso. Prominent rye whiskey notes of vanilla, caramel, and spicy grain are melded with charred oak. Low resinous hops and dark fruit esters of prune and raisin are present, alongside a faint, earthy smoke character and smooth alcohol warmth.
Taste. Intense initial impression of dark chocolate and roasted grain. The mid-palate is dominated by spicy rye bread and toasted caramel, balanced by a firm, resinous hop bitterness. The Jim Beam Rye barrels contribute layers of oak, vanilla, and spicy whiskey. The finish is long and bittersweet, with lingering notes of coffee, charred wood, and a refined, warming glow.
Mouthfeel. Very full-bodied and chewy with a thick, velvety, and luscious texture. Carbonation is moderate-low. A significant but well-integrated alcohol warmth is present, providing a smooth, spirit-like sensation without harshness.
