Brainchild is a formidable old school Imperial Stout that commands attention with its obsidian depth and intense sensory profile. This collaboration delivers a complex interplay of roasted grains, reminiscent of dark-roasted espresso and bittersweet chocolate. High-intensity aromas of black licorice and dried figs emerge, supported by a clean but potent alcohol presence reflective of its 10.8% ABV. On the palate, a firm bitterness balances the residual malt sweetness, leading to a lingering finish of toasted currants and charred grain. Its velvety, full-bodied texture provides a luxurious weight, embodying a traditional approach to the style where balance and roast-forward complexity reign supreme.
Appearance. Jet black and completely opaque (40 SRM). Pours with a thick, dense, dark tan head that shows moderate retention and leaves viscous legs on the glass.
Aroma. High intensity. Deeply roasted malt aromas of dark chocolate, French roast coffee, and hints of molasses. Moderate esters of dried plum and black currant are present, alongside a subtle spicy hop character and a clean, warming alcohol note.
Taste. Bold and multifaceted. Initial flavors of cocoa powder and scorched caramel give way to an assertive bitterness and charred grain. The mid-palate reveals dark fruit complexity—raisin and fig—integrated with a noticeable but smooth alcohol warmth. The finish is long and bittersweet, leaning toward a dry, roasty conclusion.
Mouthfeel. Full-bodied and viscous with a chewy, velvety texture. Carbonation is moderate-low. Significant but well-integrated alcohol warmth provides a comforting glow without any harsh or solventy edges.
