Amager Bryghus Apache Kid
This massive Imperial Stout is a viscous masterpiece defined by fourteen months of aging in 1792 Kentucky Straight Bourbon barrels. A complex double-mash grain bill featuring Roasted Barley, Chocolate malt, and Cara-Munich 2 provides a deep foundation of dark cocoa and espresso, while Munich and Pilsner malts add layers of toasted bread richness. Subtle earthy notes from Summit and Cascade hops provide a balance to the intense vanilla, charred oak, and caramel derived from the wood. Expect a decadent interplay of roasted grains and dried figs, smoothed by a high wheat malt content that creates a velvety, luxurious mouthfeel.
Appearance. Jet black and opaque (40+ SRM). Crowned by a dense, deep tan head with moderate retention. Noticeable viscosity is visible as thick legs on the glass.
Aroma. High intensity with a complex blend of dark chocolate, espresso, and roasted grain. Strong bourbon-derived vanilla, coconut, and spicy oak notes are prominent. Low earthy hop character. Moderate esters of prune and raisin from the UK-Ale yeast.
Taste. Rich, intense flavors of bittersweet chocolate, burnt coffee, and dark caramel. Medium-high bitterness from both roasted grains and hops provides balance to the massive malt sweetness. The finish is long and warming, dominated by bourbon, charred oak, and a lingering cocoa aftertaste.
Mouthfeel. Very full-bodied, chewy, and viscous with a velvety texture enhanced by wheat malt. Low to moderate carbonation. Significant alcohol warmth is present but smooth and well-integrated into the finish.
