Alma Mader Brewing Copper Shrine (2023)

Barleywine 14.5 º
This barrel-aged English Barleywine presents a sophisticated synthesis of long-term maturation and complex grain bills. Spending over two years in Heaven Hill barrels, the blend of wheat and rye-based ales delivers a deep, velvet-like character. Aromatics of candied figs and sticky toffee pudding lead into a palate defined by molasses and a distinct banana brulee richness. The extended aging tames the formidable 14.5% ABV into a smooth, integrated warmth. While leaning toward the malty elegance of a classic English interpretation, the barrel-driven bravado provides a bold, American-influenced structure that lingers with decadent sweetness and refined oak.
Appearance. Deep mahogany to dark copper (18-22 SRM) with ruby highlights. Pours with a thin, creamy, tan-colored head that subsides quickly to a fine collar. Brilliant clarity with notable viscosity, forming thick legs on the glass.
Aroma. High intensity. Dominant aromas of rich toffee, molasses, and dark fruit reminiscent of candied figs. Significant barrel character introduces vanilla, toasted oak, and a hint of caramelized banana. Malt character is deep and bready, enhanced by spicy rye notes and the soft sweetness of wheat. Low earthy hop presence; alcohol is noticeable but soft and spirit-like.
Taste. The initial impression is a luxurious wave of malt sweetness featuring sticky toffee pudding and molasses. Complex dark fruit flavors of fig and raisin are joined by a unique banana brulee note from the wood interaction. The rye adds a subtle spicy counterpoint to the bready wheat base. Bitterness is moderate but primarily serves to balance the high gravity; hop flavor is minimal and earthy. The finish is long and warming with a lingering sweetness that never becomes cloying.
Mouthfeel. Full-bodied and chewy with a luscious, velvety texture. Carbonation is low to moderate, typical of a long-aged strong ale. Significant alcohol warmth is present but smooth and well-integrated, lacking any harsh fusel burn. High viscosity coats the palate.
