AleSmith Old Numbskull is a definitive American Barleywine, pouring a deep, luminous copper with brilliant clarity. The sensory profile is an intense collision of rich malt and assertive West Coast hops. Aromas of gooey toffee and toasted caramel intertwine with resinous, citrusy American hop notes and a hint of dark fruit. On the palate, a massive malt backbone provides a sweet, chewy foundation of burnt sugar and bread crust, which is immediately met by an aggressive, piney bitterness. Despite its high alcohol content, the finish is deceptively smooth, balancing lingering hop oils with a warm, velvety alcohol presence.
