alea Rhubasilic is a vibrant Saison that captures a farmhouse spirit through the lens of a botanical garden. This wheat-based ale, aged in neutral barrels, displays a delicate structural nuance that supports a refreshing sensory profile without dominant oak character. The primary draw is the elegant interplay between the sharp, tangy tartness of fresh rhubarb and the aromatic, peppery perfume of basil. These additions harmonize with the classic spicy yeast esters, evoking notes of black pepper and citrus. At a sessionable strength, the beer remains exceptionally dry and effervescent, emphasizing a crisp, botanical finish that highlights the raw, fresh character of its specialty ingredients.
Appearance. Pale straw to light gold (3-5 SRM). Dense, rocky white head with excellent persistence and fine Belgian lacing. Moderate haze is present due to the high wheat content and unfiltered nature of the pour.
Aroma. Moderate-high intensity featuring a unique blend of garden-fresh basil and tart, vegetal rhubarb. The yeast provides a layer of cracked black pepper and subtle lemon zest. Low grainy wheat malt presence. No significant oak or vanilla, as the neutral barrels offer only a clean, slightly woody backdrop.
Taste. Initial impression is bright and slightly acidic from the rhubarb. The mid-palate reveals soft, grainy wheat malt and a distinct herbal basil flavor that complements the peppery phenolics. Hop bitterness is moderate but well-integrated. The finish is bone-dry and remarkably clean, with a lingering botanical freshness and a hint of pome fruit.
Mouthfeel. Light to medium-light body with very high, effervescent carbonation. No perceived alcohol warmth. Crisp and refreshing with a slight puckering quality from the rhubarb acidity.
