This traditional Altbier from Bonn pours a striking deep copper with a mahogany hue, showcasing a complex grist of Caramel, Melanoidin, and roasted malts. The sensory profile is defined by a rich, grainy-sweet malt backbone reminiscent of toasted bread crusts and nutty undertones, expertly countered by a firm, assertive bitterness. While rooted in the Niederrhein tradition, it maintains a clean fermentation character and a crisp, dry finish. Subtle floral and spicy hop notes provide balance without overshadowing the robust malt structure. It is a well-attenuated, smooth-drinking ale with a classic, lingering bitterness and a firm, satisfying body.
Appearance. Deep copper to reddish-brown (approx. 15 SRM) with brilliant clarity. Features a thick, creamy, long-lasting off-white head with excellent lacing.
Aroma. Moderate-high intensity malt aroma featuring baked bread, toasted crusts, and light nuttiness. Hop character is low to moderate, presenting spicy and floral notes. Very clean fermentation profile with no discernible esters.
Taste. Rich, grainy malt flavors of toasted bread and subtle caramel lead into a firm, assertive hop bitterness. The balance is slightly bitter but supported by malt depth. Finishes very dry and clean with a lingering, spicy hop aftertaste.
Mouthfeel. Medium body with a smooth, well-conditioned palate. Carbonation is moderate to medium-high. Very clean mouthfeel with no astringency or noticeable alcohol warmth.
