This top-fermented Ordinary Bitter presents a unique textural profile due to the addition of unmalted oats, which provides a smooth, silky counterpoint to its decidedly bitter backbone. The malt base, featuring Pilsner and Caramel varieties, offers a bready and lightly toasty foundation with subtle toffee undertones. Distinctive herbal and woody notes from Northern Brewer hops are complemented by the spicy, peppery character of Vital hops, creating a refined and complex aromatic profile. Despite its higher strength, it retains the drinkable, sessionable spirit of a traditional Bitter, finishing dry with a lingering, clean bitterness that highlights its English and German hop lineage.
Appearance. Pours a clear, pale amber to light copper color (approximately 10-12 SRM) with a fine-textured, off-white head that shows moderate retention and light lacing.
Aroma. Moderate malt aroma with notes of toasted bread and light caramel. Low to moderate fruity esters are present, alongside a medium hop intensity featuring woody, minty, and herbal scents from the Northern Brewer and Vital additions.
Taste. Initial bready malt sweetness quickly gives way to a firm, moderately high bitterness. Flavors of light caramel and crusty bread are balanced by earthy, woody, and slightly spicy hop character. The finish is dry and crisp with a lingering bitterness that remains clean on the palate, lacking any harshness.
Mouthfeel. Medium-light body with a noticeably smooth, creamy texture derived from the unmalted oats. Carbonation is moderate, and at 5.3% ABV, there is a very light, well-integrated alcohol warmth that enhances the mouthfeel without becoming heavy.
