This Imperial Porter presents a complex layering of deep roast and evocative peat smoke. The use of smoked and peated malts introduces an earthy, campfire intensity that merges with the classic American Porter profile of dark chocolate and espresso. Maturation on Scotch-soaked oak chips adds a sophisticated dimension of vanilla, toasted wood, and a whisper of highland peat. Despite its strength at 8% ABV, the beer maintains a structured balance where the assertive bitterness meets the resinous depth of the wood aging. The result is a rich, smoldering sensory experience that balances the intensity of the dark grains with the lingering spirit of the Scotch.
Appearance. Very dark brown to opaque black (38 SRM) with garnet-like highlights. Topped by a full, tan-colored head with moderately good retention and fine-beaded lacing.
Aroma. High intensity featuring a prominent blend of roasted coffee and dark chocolate. The addition of peated malts provides a distinct earthy and phenolic smoke character. Subtle notes of toasted oak, vanilla, and a faint malt whiskey aroma from the Scotch-soaked chips are present, alongside a low resiny hop background.
Taste. Moderately strong roasted flavor of baker's chocolate and lightly burnt grain. The smoked and peated malts impart a significant but integrated campfire quality. Medium-high bitterness provides structure against a medium-sweet malt backbone. The finish reveals toasted oak tannins and a touch of Scotch whiskey, ending dry with a lingering roasted and smoky aftertaste.
Mouthfeel. Medium-full body with a smooth, moderately creamy texture. Carbonation is moderate. A noticeable but pleasant alcohol warmth is present, consistent with its strength, accompanied by a slight dark malt and oak-derived astringency.
