This Imperial Stout offers a massive sensory experience, defined by the use of special malts for island whisky. The high 14.8% alcohol content provides a significant, warming presence that carries intense notes of creosote and charred wood, reminiscent of sun-baked railway sleepers. Deep layers of bittersweet chocolate and espresso emerge from the dark malts, while the unique fermentation process yields a complex, medicinal smokiness. This is a viscous, brooding beer where the assertive bitterness of roasted grains meets a dense, velvety texture, culminating in a long, tar-like finish with a hint of dark fruit esters.
Appearance. Color is jet black and completely opaque (40 SRM). It supports a persistent, dense, deep tan head with moderate retention. High alcohol and viscosity are visible as heavy legs on the glass.
Aroma. High intensity with a complex blend of rich roast and medicinal smoke. Aggressive notes of tar and creosote from special malts for island whisky dominate, supported by bittersweet chocolate, coffee, and black licorice. Low esters of prune and raisin are present, alongside a prominent but smooth alcohol warmth.
Taste. The initial impression is an intense mix of charred grain and phenolic smoke. Robust malt flavors of dark chocolate and espresso are balanced by an assertive, high bitterness. The mid-palate reveals medicinal peat and tar, leading to a lingering, bittersweet finish. Fermentation character includes subtle dark fruit esters and a clean, warming aftertaste.
Mouthfeel. Full to very full-bodied and exceptionally chewy with a velvety, luscious texture. Carbonation is low to moderate. A significant, smooth alcohol warmth is present without being harsh or solventy.
