Against the Grain’s Pile of Face is a punchy American IPA that centers on a mountain of various hops to deliver an assertive, hop-forward experience. This beer leans into the classic dank overtones associated with aggressive hopping, complemented by a bright bouquet of citrus and more subtle, nuanced heirloom fruits. A foundation of simple malts provides a clean, neutral backbone that stays out of the way, allowing the resinous and fruity hop profile to dominate the palate. It is a straightforward representation of the style, balancing firm bitterness with a dry, clean finish and a moderately strong alcohol presence.
Appearance. Color is deep gold to pale amber (approx. 8 SRM). Pours with a persistent, medium-sized white head that leaves significant lacing. Clarity is generally clear, though a very faint hop haze may be present.
Aroma. High intensity hop aroma featuring prominent resinous, dank, and piney notes. Strong citrus characteristics of grapefruit and orange peel are layered with softer heirloom fruit scents like stone fruit. Low, grainy-sweet malt aroma provides a subtle background, while the fermentation profile is exceptionally clean.
Taste. Assertive hop-forward flavor mirroring the aroma with resinous dankness and bright citrus pith. Bitterness is firm and high but clean, never becoming harsh. The malt flavor is low, providing just enough cracker-like sweetness to support the hop load. Finishes very dry and crisp with a lingering, pleasant bitterness and a touch of hop resin on the aftertaste.
Mouthfeel. Medium body with a smooth, slightly oily texture from the hop oils. Carbonation is medium-high, providing a crisp bite. A light, well-integrated alcohol warmth is present, commensurate with its 6.5% ABV. No astringency.
