Evening Gleams, a collaboration between Adnams and Verdant, is a nuanced Specialty IPA that belies its sessionable strength. The sensory journey begins with an assertive, resinous bouquet of cedar and pine, transitioning into tropical pineapple and bready malt notes. Distinctive rye spice adds a peppery complexity, complemented by subtle esters of red apple and blueberry. On the palate, a soft initial sweetness gives way to pithy orange zest and a firm, lingering bitterness. This ale expertly balances the rustic, spicy character of rye with a modern, fruit-forward hop profile, resulting in a surprisingly full-bodied and multi-layered experience.
Appearance. Deep amber to dark brown (20-30 SRM). Clear to slightly hazy with a persistent, light tan, creamy head that leaves moderate lacing.
Aroma. High intensity featuring resinous pine and cedar. Tropical pineapple and bready malt are prominent, accompanied by an earthy, peppery rye spice. Subordinate esters of red apple and blueberry provide a clean, fruity background.
Taste. Initial bready and light caramel sweetness transitions quickly to sharp orange pith and citrus zest. Significant hop-derived flavors of pine and pineapple are balanced by a crunchy rye spice. The finish is dry with a firm, lingering bitterness and a clean fermentation profile.
