This Hazy Double IPA from ÅBEN presents an exotic and full-bodied profile centered on a trio of high-impact hops. An intense bouquet of tropical fruit arises from the use of Citra and Idaho 7, delivering vivid notes of mango, overripe pineapple, and crushed stone fruit. Simcoe adds a sophisticated layer of complexity with its characteristic passion fruit and resinous pine undertones. Despite its 8.4% strength, the experience is remarkably smooth, prioritizing a velvety, saturated mouthfeel and lush fruit character over aggressive bitterness. The result is a sensory-rich ale that balances high-intensity hopping with a soft, supportive malt backbone.
Appearance. Deep gold to light orange (6–9 SRM). Opaque and hazy. Features a thick, persistent, creamy white head that leaves dense lacing on the glass.
Aroma. High intensity. Prominent tropical aromas of mango, pineapple, and passion fruit dominate. Bright citrus notes of lime and grapefruit follow. A subtle, clean, bready malt character supports the hop-forward profile. Fermentation is clean with very low fruity esters.
Taste. Bold and saturated fruit flavors. Initial impressions of mango and citrus from Citra hops transition into a juicy pineapple mid-palate driven by Idaho 7. Simcoe provides a light resinous and earthy pine balance. Bitterness is moderate and smooth, lacking harshness. The finish is soft and slightly sweet with a lingering tropical fruit aftertaste.
Mouthfeel. Full-bodied with a soft, pillowy, and creamy texture. Moderate carbonation. A gentle, well-integrated alcohol warmth is present, reflecting its strength without being solventy. Very low astringency.
