Abbaye des Rocs Brune 1979

This Belgian Dark Strong Ale presents a majestic, deep ruby-red hue reminiscent of a fine vintage wine. Eschewing the traditional addition of sugar, its immense complexity is derived entirely from a blend of seven malts and a tripartite hop selection of Belgian, German, and Czech varieties. The aroma is powerfully sweet and evocative, leading into a rich, unctuous palate where notes of dark fruit and subtle hints of burnt wood intertwine without being scorched. Despite the absence of simple sugars, a perceived sweetness competes harmoniously with a firm bitterness, resulting in a mystic, mature depth that lingers with a prolonged, wine-like elegance.
Appearance. Deep coppery-brown to majestic ruby red (18–22 SRM). Features a huge, dense, and persistent light tan head with excellent lacing. The clarity is brilliant with a striking red highlight when held to the light.
Aroma. High intensity with a rich, bready-toasty malt base and deep caramel notes. Pronounced esters of raisins, plums, and dried cherries are primary. Subtle spicy phenols and a soft, perfumy alcohol presence are evident, with low spicy and floral hop notes from the blend of Belgian, German, and Czech hops.
Taste. Initial impression is malty-rich and complex, featuring flavors of dark figs, dates, and dark bread crusts. A subtle, non-scorched burnt wood character adds depth. Despite the 'sugar-like' perception, the beer is balanced by a moderate bitterness that prevents a cloying finish. The aftertaste is remarkably long and unctuous, evolving from malt sweetness to a drying, alcohol-warmed conclusion.
Mouthfeel. Medium-full body with a creamy, unctuous, and mouth-filling texture. High carbonation provides a lively lift on the palate without being sharp. Noticeable but well-integrated alcohol warmth at 9% ABV. Smooth and devoid of harsh tannins.
