This robust Foreign Extra Stout presents a sophisticated intersection of dark roast and spirit-infusion. Deep layers of espresso and bittersweet dark chocolate emerge from a complex grist of roasted malts, seamlessly integrated with the charred oak and subtle vanilla nuances of Blackwater Distillery whiskey barrels. The 7.4% ABV provides a refined warmth that lifts the earthy hop character, while the barrel aging adds a smooth, vinous complexity to the classic dry finish. It is a rich, full-bodied experience where the assertive roast is tempered by the mellowing influence of the wood, resulting in a balanced, lingering aftertaste of toasted grain and fine Irish whiskey.
Appearance. Opaque, very deep brown to black in color (SRM 35-40). Pours with a large, dense tan head showing excellent retention and thick lacing.
Aroma. High intensity roast with dominant notes of espresso and dark chocolate. Prominent whiskey barrel character introduces vanilla, toasted oak, and a subtle spirituous note. Secondary aromas of plum, molasses, and a faint earthy hop presence.
Taste. Initial impression is rich and roasty, featuring flavors of burnt grain and dark cocoa. The whiskey barrel aging provides a smooth layer of vanilla and oak. Medium-high bitterness (approx. 60 IBU) provides a clean counterpoint to the malt weight. The finish is moderately dry with lingering notes of coffee and charred wood.
Mouthfeel. Medium-full to full body with a smooth, creamy texture. Moderate carbonation. Provides a noticeable but refined alcohol warmth from the 7.4% ABV and barrel aging without being harsh or fusel.
