This vibrant twist on a German-style lager bursts with the zesty, sun-drenched essence of local Mandarins. The citrus addition creates an immediate sensory bridge to the New Zealand summer, offering bright, pithy aromas that meld seamlessly with a clean, neutral grain profile. On the palate, the Mandarin provides a succulent, fleshy fruit sweetness that never feels cloying, supported by the lean, crisp structure of a classic American Lager. Effervescent and brilliantly refreshing, it finishes with a tidy, dry snap and a lingering hint of orange oil, making it the quintessential companion for the beach or the bay.
Appearance. Very pale straw to light gold (2–4 SRM); brilliant clarity with a frothy, white, moderately-persistent head that leaves light lacing.
Aroma. Moderate to high intensity aromatic Mandarin orange, presenting as fresh zest and sweet juice. Beneath the fruit lies a very low, clean, grainy-sweet malt presence. Hop aroma is nearly absent, though a faint floral quality may peek through. Fermentation is exceptionally clean with no esters or phenols.
Taste. Initial impression is dominated by bright, citrusy Mandarin flavor, providing a perceived sweetness. The mid-palate reveals a neutral, cracker-like malt backbone. Bitterness is low (approx. 12–15 IBU), serving only to balance the fruit without adding a sharp edge. The finish is crisp, clean, and dry with a short, refreshing aftertaste of citrus peel.
Mouthfeel. Medium-light body with high carbonation that provides a lively, scrubbing effervescence. No alcohol warmth is detected. The texture is smooth and watery, free from any astringency or heaviness.
