This monumental Imperial Coffee Stout celebrates 8 Wired’s 15th anniversary by amping up their iconic iStout to a massive 13.5% ABV. The sensory experience is dominated by an intense, freshly roasted Rush espresso blend, which provides deep layers of dark chocolate, oily bean, and charred earth. This sits atop a thick, viscous base of roasted malts that offer notes of black coffee, molasses, and toasted pumpernickel. Despite the high alcohol content, the warmth is integrated, complementing the aggressive bitterness of the roasted grains and hops. It is a decadent, velvety expression of the marriage between craft beer and specialty coffee.
Appearance. Opaque, midnight black (SRM 40+). Pours with a thick, creamy, deep mocha-colored head that shows excellent persistence and leaves dense, oily lacing on the glass.
Aroma. High intensity. Dominant aroma of freshly pulled espresso and dark-roasted coffee beans. Supporting notes of bittersweet chocolate, burnt sugar, and a hint of dark fruit esters like dried plum. Low earthy hop character. Clean fermentation with a noticeable but smooth ethanol presence.
Taste. Bold initial impression of cold-brew coffee and charred malt. Mid-palate reveals rich layers of cocoa powder, molasses, and toasted nuts. High bitterness from both dark malts and hops is balanced by a residual malty sweetness and heavy body. The finish is long and lingering, featuring espresso oils and a pleasant alcoholic warmth.
Mouthfeel. Full-bodied and viscous with a chewy, velvet-like texture. Carbonation is moderate, providing enough lift to prevent it from feeling cloying. Significant alcohol warmth is present but lacks harshness or solvent-like edges.

We’ve taken the base recipe for the iconic iStout, and cranked the ABV right up. Using an intense, rich, espresso blend from our friends at Rush, this is truly one mighty coffee experience!
