8 Wired’s Brave Old World pays homage to the traditional Schwarzbier with a refined, modern touch. This dark lager pours with a beautiful ruby depth, delivering an aroma defined by clean lager fermentation and subtle notes of dark chocolate and freshly ground coffee. The use of German Munich malt and Pilsner malt creates a smooth, bready foundation, while huskless roasted malts provide a delicate toasted character without any burnt astringency. On the palate, it is exceptionally crisp and light-bodied, featuring a restrained lashing of spicy hops that leads into a dry, refreshing finish. It is a masterful balance of dark roasted complexity and high drinkability.
Appearance. Medium to very dark brown in color with distinct ruby and garnet highlights when held to the light. The beer is clear and topped with a large, persistent, tan-colored head that leaves fine lacing.
Aroma. Moderate intensity with a clean lager profile. Low aromatic sweetness is complemented by hints of dark chocolate and roasted coffee. A light herbal and spicy hop presence is noticeable but stays secondary to the bready malt character.
Taste. Initial impression is a clean, bready malt sweetness followed quickly by moderate roasted flavors of bitter chocolate and coffee. It lacks the burnt or acrid character of a porter. The hop bitterness is medium-low, supporting a crisp and very dry finish. The aftertaste is clean with a subtle, lingering roastiness.
Mouthfeel. Medium-light body with moderate to moderately-high carbonation. The texture is notably smooth and refreshing with no perceptible alcohol warmth, astringency, or harshness from the roasted grains.
