71 Brewing’s Throwin' Shapes is a vibrant West Coast interpretation that puts the complex character of Simcoe hops on center stage. This American IPA opens with an intense sensory hit of resinous pine and bright citrus zest, underpinned by a clean, crackery malt backbone. The palate is defined by a firm, balancing bitterness that slices through a light toasted malt sweetness, leading to a decidedly crisp and dry finish. With its brilliant clarity and medium-light body, the beer highlights a pungent hop-forward profile where grapefruit and forest floor notes linger, supported by a smooth, well-integrated alcohol warmth.
Appearance.Medium gold color (approximately 7-8 SRM) with brilliant clarity. Pours with a medium-sized, white, persistent head that leaves significant lacing.
Aroma.High intensity hop aroma featuring prominent Simcoe characteristics of resinous pine, grapefruit peel, and a hint of woodsy spice. Clean, low grainy maltiness supports the hops without any caramel interference. Fermentation is clean with no perceptible esters.
Taste.Strong hop flavors of citrus and pine dominate from the first sip. Malt character is low and clean, providing a lightly toasted, grainy foundation. Bitterness is firm and high but lacks harshness, leading into a very dry, hoppy finish. The aftertaste is clean, lingering with resinous hop oils and a crisp bitterness.
Mouthfeel.Medium-light body with a smooth, crisp texture. Carbonation is moderate-high, enhancing the dry finish. There is a very light, smooth alcohol warmth that is well-integrated and appropriate for its strength.
