Absence of Light is an indulgent Sweet Stout that artfully blends dessert-inspired decadence with classic stout architecture. The sensory journey begins with unmistakable aromatics of creamy peanut butter cups, driven by real peanut butter and cacao nibs. This transitions into a luxurious palate where layers of caramel malt, chocolate malt, and roasted malts provide a robust foundation. The addition of milk sugar imparts a silky, velvety texture, balancing the moderate roasted bitterness with a lingering, creamy sweetness. Rich chocolate and subtle coffee notes emerge in the mid-palate, creating a complex profile that mimics a liquid confection while maintaining the heart of a well-crafted dark ale.
Appearance. Very dark brown to opaque black (SRM 35-40). Pours with a thick, creamy, tan to medium-brown head featuring excellent retention and dense lacing.
Aroma. High intensity aromatics of creamy peanut butter and milk chocolate. Supporting notes of sweet cream and roasted grain follow, with hints of caramel and very low dark fruit esters. No hop aroma is present.
Taste. The palate is dominated by rich milk chocolate and nutty peanut butter flavors. A moderate roasted grain character provides a coffee-like bitterness that balances the high residual sweetness from milk sugar. Mid-palate highlights of caramel and toasted bread lead into a sweet, creamy finish with a lingering chocolate-peanut butter aftertaste. Low fruity esters and no hop flavor.
Mouthfeel. Medium-full to full-bodied with a luxurious, silky, and creamy texture. Carbonation is moderate. A light, well-integrated alcohol warmth is present, consistent with its strength, without any harsh astringency.
