3 Ravens Brewery James Bean

Barleywine 13.6 º 39 IBU
James Bean is a monumental English Barley Wine, elevated by an arduous eight-hour boil and fourteen months of maturation in first-fill American oak bourbon barrels. This intensive process yields a sensory profile defined by deep, concentrated layers of sticky toffee, treacle, and caramelized sugars. The extended barrel aging infuses profound notes of vanilla, toasted coconut, and charred oak, seamlessly integrated with a dense core of dried figs and raisins. Despite the formidable 13.6% ABV, the alcohol manifests as a refined, smooth warmth rather than a sharp burn, making this a true sipping beverage with immense viscosity and a decadent, lingering finish.
Appearance. Deep mahogany to dark brown with brilliant clarity and shimmering ruby highlights; produces a thin, tan-colored head with minimal retention and prominent, slow-moving "legs" on the glass due to high viscosity.
Aroma. High intensity; decadent layers of dark caramel, molasses, and toasted bread are complemented by heavy bourbon-soaked oak, vanilla, and hints of coconut. Moderate dark fruit esters of prune and raisin mingle with a soft, rounded alcohol presence.
Taste. Initial rich, malty sweetness of toffee and biscuit evolves into complex flavors of dried dark fruits and marmalade; the first-fill bourbon barrels contribute strong vanilla and oak-tannin structure. Hop bitterness is moderate and receding, leaving a balance that leans heavily toward malt and barrel; finishes long, warming, and moderately sweet.
Mouthfeel. Full-bodied and exceptionally chewy with a viscous, velvety texture; carbonation is low, accentuating the luscious weight and significant, though well-integrated, alcohol warmth.

Historically, brandy was often referred to as “liquid currency” – alluding to it having more value as a commodity for trade than as a beverage. In the modern world, barrel-aged barley wine has become the new Liquid Currency. Despite no one asking for it, we’ve gone and brewed another barley wine and we’ll be damned if this isn’t our best one yet.
Boiled for 8 hours and aged 14 months in first fill American oak bourbon barrels, this is a big dumb beer of the highest order. – 3 Ravens
