This fortified English Barley Wine presents a profound sensory experience, drawing on a decade-spanning solera including stocks from 2011. It pours with the stillness of a fine liqueur, releasing an intense bouquet of dried figs, treacle, and dark muscovado sugar. The fortification with distilled beer spirit introduces a clean, warming depth that integrates seamlessly with the vinous, oxidative notes of sherry and ex-whisky oak from thirteen months in hogsheads. On the palate, it is exceptionally rich, layering flavors of dates and fruitcake against a backdrop of charred wood and subtle earthy hops. The finish is long, decadent, and profoundly warming, echoing the beer’s remarkable strength and maturity.
Appearance. Deep mahogany to dark brown (SRM 20-22) with brilliant clarity and prominent ruby highlights; no head formation or lacing as it is packaged without carbonation, displaying heavy legs and high viscosity.
Aroma. High intensity with a complex blend of rich toffee, molasses, and dark fruit esters like raisin and plum; notable oxidative character reminiscent of aged sherry and vinous alcohol, complemented by vanillin and toasted oak from whisky barrels.
Taste. Intensely malty and sweet with layers of biscuit, caramel, and dark fruitcake; medium-high bitterness provides structure against the dense residual sugars, while the finish is long and warming with lingering notes of fortified wine, spirituous heat, and earthy English hops.
Mouthfeel. Full-bodied and syrupy with a luscious, velvety texture; completely still with no carbonation, accompanied by a significant and persistent alcohol warmth that remains smooth and well-integrated.
