In 1871 staat Jan-Leonard Moortgat, een afstammeling van een brouwersfamilie uit Steenhuffel, samen met zijn vrouw Maria De Block aan de wieg van de toenmalige boerderij-brouwerij Moortgat. Op dat moment is de nieuwgeborene slechts één van de 4000 brouwerijen die rond de eeuwwisseling actief zijn in België.
De beginperiode is dan ook niet bepaald gemakkelijk: Jan-Leonard probeert die eerste pioniersjaren een reeks hoge gistingsbieren zoals Stavelot aan de man te brengen. Met wisselend succes. Dankzij een combinatie van gedrevenheid, brouwerspassie en vakmanschap, weet Jan-Leonard echter na verloop van tijd een trouw klantenbestand uit te bouwen, niet enkel in de omgeving van Breendonk, maar zelfs tot bij de Brusselse burgerij. Getuige hiervan: de opening van een depot in Laken. Het begin, zo blijkt, van een nu al ruim honderdveertigjarig durend succesverhaal...
